Our runners had a great final showing at the Last Chance Qualifier meet. Ironically, it was a “First Chance” for a few of our runners as they were racing indoors for the first time this year. Or in Ryan Anderson’s case, 3 years.
Here are the hightlights:
--Ryan Anderson got a PR in the 800m, winning in 1:52.74 in his first time out. He not only won but he came from last to first. He also negative split his race for the 1st time.
--Mike Sayenko and John Ricardi had excellent races. Mike ran 8:04, less than 2 seconds off his PR only 5 weeks after his Olympic Trials marathon (and subsequent down time). John ran with Mike step for step but started slowing in the final kilometer (he may have been sick). His 8:19 was his best time this season.
--Bennett Grimes went for it as he led his 5k race for about 1 mile before gradually slowing and finishing 4th. It was a good race for him to gain experience, especially in not leading until you have to.
--Kyra Burke had a great race as she also went for it as the high school junior led until just a bit before the first mile against a collegiate field. She was on pace to run 9:42 for 800m, but naturally slowed after that to finish 5th, only a few seconds off her PR.
--Jane Larson ran her first race since last summer due to a protracted injury. And she found herself in the top heat of the mile, a usually welcome situation but not ideal now. Nonetheless she ran a terrific race, finishing unlast in 4:53! (at one point she trailed the entire field by 35 yards).
--Tyler Van Dooren had a fantastic mile race. Before the season began his PR was 4:36. 3 weeks ago he ran 4:29 and on Sunday he ran super, in the thick of the race the whole time to finish in 4:22!
